Rie Sakamoto's rubber band collection where one size fits all
Japanese Fashion designer Rie Sakamoto released her ‘Rubber Collection’ this January as part of a group graduate exhibition at Tama Art University in Tokyo. The collection includes a dress and a jacket, one size fits all, where the project focussed on exploring the functionality of overlooked materials.
Rubber bands are easily accessed and hold many functions, the stretch enables the garment to adapt to different body sizes. Sakamoto started working with rubber bands after she realised not only did she like the aesthetic but when knitted together, produced a sheer fabric with flexibility and unusual texture.
Rie Sakamoto knitted each item in her collection by hand and the entire project took over half a year to complete. The collection has started to gain media traction as in this time of isolation, many artists and creatives are looking to overlooked items to use in their work. The clothes are not meant to be an every day item but instead a playful piece of contemporary art to showcase using new materials.
